Rescue teams after earthquakes or other disasters must rely on acoustic technologies that belong to the past era of analog signal processing, thus demanding highly trained operators. A joint project (named "SOS Team"), partially funded by Regione Lombardia, had the aim of develop an up-to-date digital device to improve search and rescue operations under debris. |
ARESYS designed a novel approach that allows,
by analyzing the differential delays of acoustic signals recorded by an array
of geophones posed on debris, the automatic three dimensional localization of survivors, in real time.
The tests carried out in collaboration with fire departments have shown the potential
of this newly developed technology, that can help speeding up search and rescue operations
in the effort of saving human lives after disasters.
